I’m interested in starting a herd of goats in the spring. I have about 1.5-2 acres that are gravel base (last owner used this for equipment storage for his asphalt business). Any concerns on using this base for goats long term with the expectation that grazing will be limited in the area? Eventually would like to top dress a large portion with top soil and plant for pasture but not in the cards this year or next most likely. The gravel is varying depths from 3-4” deep to over 12” in some areas so complete removal is out of the question.

I don’t have goats, so cannot advise. Maybe make them a small pen and put dirt in it? You could put dirt down a little at a time, moving the pen and planting grass behind them. The dirt, goat droppings and wasted hay could be building your soil. Plant clover, sow in the fall, let it go through its life cycle in the spring, go to seed and die back. Mow it for humus. White ball clover would reseed and come back.

Where do you live and what summer grasses do well in your area?
